Recognizing the Many Faces of ADHD
October is ADHD Awareness Month, and this year's theme, "Awareness is Key," couldn't be more fitting. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects approximately 6 million children and 4.5 million adults in the United States, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood mental health conditions. At Resolutions Therapy Practice, we're committed to spreading accurate information about ADHD and supporting individuals and families affected by this neurodevelopmental condition. ADHD isn't simply about hyperactivity or lack of focus – it's a complex neurological condition that affects executive functioning, the brain's management system. People with ADHD often struggle with working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control. These challenges can impact academic performance, work productivity, relationships, and self-esteem.
Misconceptions
One of the biggest misconceptions about ADHD is that it only affects young, hyperactive boys. In reality, ADHD presents differently across genders, ages, and individuals. Girls and women are frequently underdiagnosed because their symptoms often manifest as inattentiveness rather than hyperactivity. They might appear daydreamy, disorganized, or overwhelmed rather than disruptive, leading to missed diagnoses or misdiagnosis as anxiety or depression. Adult ADHD is increasingly recognized as symptoms persist beyond childhood in about 60% of cases. Adults with ADHD might struggle with time management, organization, maintaining relationships, or completing tasks. They may have a history of job changes, relationship difficulties, or chronic feelings of underachievement despite high intelligence.
What ADHD Looks Like
The three presentations of ADHD – predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined – each require different recognition and support strategies. Inattentive ADHD might involve difficulty sustaining attention, following instructions, or organizing tasks. Hyperactive-impulsive ADHD includes restlessness, excessive talking, or difficulty waiting turns. The combined presentation includes symptoms from both categories.
Comorbid conditions frequently accompany ADHD, complicating diagnosis and treatment. Up to 40% of children and 50% of adults with ADHD also have anxiety disorders. Mood disorders affect about 40% of individuals with ADHD, while up to 50% of those with substance use disorders also have ADHD. These overlapping conditions require comprehensive assessment and integrated treatment approaches.
Women and ADHD
Women face particular challenges with ADHD diagnosis. Research shows that 46% of women are misdiagnosed with another mental health condition before receiving an accurate ADHD diagnosis. Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause can affect ADHD symptoms, making recognition even more complex. The impact of untreated ADHD extends beyond academic or work performance. It affects self-esteem, relationships, and overall life satisfaction. However, with proper diagnosis and treatment, anyone with ADHD can thrive. Treatment typically includes a combination of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle modifications.
At Resolutions Therapy Practice, we provide evidence-based treatments. We work with children, adolescents, and adults to develop personalized strategies that harness their strengths while addressing challenges. Our approach includes family education, school collaboration, and ongoing support to ensure long-term success. We also understand that medication can be an important component of mental health treatment, and our dedicated psychiatric nurse practitioner provides comprehensive medication management services to ensure safe and effective treatment.
ADHD isn't a character flaw or parenting failure – it's a medical condition that responds well to appropriate treatment. During ADHD Awareness Month, let's commit to reducing stigma and ensuring everyone with ADHD gets the support they deserve.
