Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidence-based treatment that uses guided eye movements and imagery techniques to help the brain process distressing memories and experiences. ART shares some similarities with EMDR, particularly its use of eye movements while working with difficult memories, but it follows its own structured approach and incorporates different techniques.

One of the unique features of ART is that you do not have to describe the details of a traumatic experience out loud in order to work through it. You remain awake, aware, and in control while your therapist guides you through a specific sequence of eye movements, imagery, emotions, and physical sensations.

Rather than erasing or changing what happened, ART is designed to change the emotional and physical response attached to the memory—allowing you to remember the experience without the same intensity or distress.

ART also uses Voluntary Image Replacement, which helps replace distressing mental images while keeping the factual memory intact. Like EMDR, ART may be especially helpful when talking about what happened hasn't been enough.

ART is typically a brief, structured treatment and may be used for trauma and PTSD, anxiety, depression, grief, fears and phobias, and other distressing experiences.

The memory doesn't have to disappear for its hold on you to change.

How Does ART Work?

ART utilizes eye movements, similar to those experienced during REM sleep, to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories and reduce their emotional impact. Key features of ART include:

  • Brief, solution-focused sessions

  • No need to discuss traumatic details extensively

  • Rapid relief, often within 1-5 sessions

  • Combines elements of several proven therapies
