In-School Counseling Can Bring Therapy During School
For many families, the hardest part of getting a child into therapy isn’t deciding to do it. It’s the logistics.
Sometimes the struggles that matter most happen during the school day, far from any therapist’s office. That’s why Resolutions Therapy Practice offers in-school counseling, with therapists who meet with students directly at school in the Boone, Clark, Madison, and Fayette County school districts.
What Is In-School Counseling?
In-school counseling is therapy delivered on-site at a child’s school. A therapist from RTP meets with the student during the school day, using the same evidence-based approaches we use in our offices. Depending on the child, sessions might draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, play and art-based techniques, mindfulness, and practical skill-building.
This is different from the support a school counselor provides. School counselors carry large caseloads and a wide range of responsibilities, from academic planning to schoolwide programs. An in-school therapist focuses on ongoing mental health care for individual students and works alongside school staff rather than replacing them.
Who Is In-School Therapy a Good Fit For?
School-based therapy tends to work well for students with mild to moderate behavioral or emotional concerns, especially when those struggles show up mostly at school. It’s also a strong option for families who want their child’s therapist and school staff working together, or whose schedules make after-school appointments hard to keep.
It may not be the best fit if a child is experiencing severe emotional or behavioral challenges, if school isn’t where the difficulty shows up. For these situations more intensive sessions might be more beneficial. In those cases, our in-office and telehealth services offer more flexibility and support.
What Can In-School Counseling Help With?
Students often start school-based therapy for anxiety, low mood, trouble managing frustration, difficulty with peers, ADHD-related challenges, or stress from changes at home, like a divorce, a move, or a loss. Sessions give students a consistent place to practice skills they can use right away: calming down before a situation escalates, speaking up for themselves, handling conflict with a classmate, or getting back on track after a hard morning.
Because the therapist is already in the building, they can see how a child functions in the setting where things feel hardest. With parent permission, they can coordinate with teachers and school counselors so everyone is working toward the same goals.
Where Do Parents Fit In?
In-school therapy isn’t a handoff. Parents stay involved, and your child’s therapist will talk with you about goals, share progress, and suggest ways to support that progress at home. When home life is part of the picture, many families pair school-based sessions with family counseling.
