Using Insurance for Therapy Is Easier Than You Think
For a lot of people, the biggest hurdle between thinking about therapy and actually starting isn’t motivation. It’s the paperwork.
Will my insurance cover this? How much will it cost? Where do I even begin?
Those are fair questions. Deciding to start therapy is challenging enough without adding a layer of paperwork and financial worry, and that uncertainty alone leads many people to put it off indefinitely. The good news is that getting started is usually simpler than it looks, and you don't have to figure it out by yourself.
Does Insurance Cover Therapy?
In many cases, yes. Federal mental health parity laws require most health plans to cover mental health care at the same level as other medical care. If your plan covers doctor visits, there’s a good chance it covers therapy too, though the details vary from plan to plan.
At Resolutions Therapy Practice, we accept most major insurance, including many public and employer-sponsored plans. Our insurance page provides information on all the types of insurance we take, but if you don’t see your plan there, reach out and our team will look into it with you.
What Should I Ask My Insurance Company?
A quick call to the member services number on the back of your card answers most questions. Ask whether outpatient mental health services are covered, what your copay or coinsurance is per session, whether you’ve met your deductible, whether you need a referral or prior authorization, and whether telehealth is covered the same way as in-person visits.
Don’t want to dig through plan documents? That’s fine too. When you contact us, our team can help you understand your coverage before your first appointment.
What Is an EAP, and Do I Have One?
Many employers offer an Employee Assistance Program, or EAP, often as a benefit people don’t realize they have. EAPs typically cover a set number of counseling sessions at no cost to the employee. Check with your HR department or benefits portal. RTP works with several EAPs, so it’s worth asking whether yours is one of them.
What If I Don’t Have Insurance?
Insurance isn’t the only path. Our clinicians offer self-pay rates, and we accept HSA payments and major credit cards. For qualifying clients, our case management program can also connect you with resources for basic needs, medical appointments, and other support at no cost.
Does Telehealth Work With Insurance?
Often, yes. Telehealth makes therapy easier to fit into a busy week, with no commute and no waiting room. RTP offers telehealth throughout Kentucky, and many plans cover virtual sessions the same way they cover in-person visits. It’s a good question to add when you check your benefits.
What Happens When I Reach Out?
You call or send a message. Our team asks a few questions about what you’re looking for, gathers your insurance information, and helps match you with a therapist whose experience and availability fit your needs. Then you schedule your first appointment. That’s it.
Whether you’re looking for individual counseling, support for your child, or help for your family, the first step is the same.
If you’ve been putting off therapy, support is available, and getting started is simpler than you might think. Schedule an appointment with Resolutions Therapy Practice today by calling 859-212-3180 or CONTACT US.
