Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) are healthcare professionals with advanced education and clinical training. Dr. Yasmin Majumder, DNP, FNP-BC, PMHNP, is our trained nurse practitioner APRN at Resolutions Therapy Practice. There are different types of APRNs, including Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP) like Yasmin, who specialize in mental health care. PMHNPs are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat individuals with psychiatric and mental health disorders. After earning a graduate degree in 2013 and boarding as a Family Nurse Practitioner, Yasmin furthered her education at the University of KY to become certified as a Psych-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Her experience with mental health patients is broad, ranging from hospital and university settings to caring for the homeless in community-based clinics. A compassionate patient advocate, Yasmin brings her experience and education, along with her kind heart, to provide the very best care to patients. She works with new PMHNPs, particularly in regions with limited access to psychiatric care, such as rural areas, addressing the severe need for mental health services in underserved populations. How a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners Provide Medicine for Mental Health PMHNPs conduct comprehensive assessments to understand a patient's mental health history, symptoms, and overall health, and based on the assessment, the PMHNP will make a diagnosis, formulates a treatment plan, and collaborates with the patient to set goals for mental health improvement.
PMHNPs have the authority to prescribe medications, including psychotropic medications such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, and mood stabilizers, and play a crucial role in medication management. They monitor the patient's response to medications, adjust dosages as needed, and address any side effects or concerns. In addition to prescribing medications, PMHNPs often provide psychoeducation to patients and their families. This may include information about the prescribed medications, potential side effects, and strategies for managing symptoms. It's important to note that medication is just one aspect of mental health treatment. PMHNPs often work in collaboration with other mental health professionals, such as psychologists, social workers, and counselors, to provide comprehensive care that may include therapy, counseling, and lifestyle interventions.
